Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech and Sightseeing

What better way to kick off your Moroccan adventure than diving straight into the magic of Marrakech? Known as the Red City for its distinctive terracotta-colored buildings, Marrakech is home to centuries-old palaces, vibrant souks, and one of the liveliest squares in the world.

After arriving and dropping off your bags, it’s time to explore! Start at the majestic Koutoubia Mosque, the city’s tallest building and a masterpiece of 12th-century Almohad architecture. Its 77-meter minaret can be spotted from almost anywhere in the city. If you get lost, just look up!

Next, wander into the Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the heart of Marrakech. Get lost in its narrow alleys, peaceful riads, colorful textiles, and decorated courtyards.

As you wander deeper into the Medina, don’t miss Marrakech’s iconic souks, a labyrinth of colors and scents. Visit Souk Semmarine, known for its dazzling textiles and painted ceramics, and Souk Haddadine, where artisans handcraft lanterns right in front of you.

Tip: Bargaining is expected, so channel your inner negotiator and enjoy the exchange; it’s part of the culture!

Escape the bustle of the souks and take a break at Le Jardin Secret, a hidden oasis right in the center of the city. It’s a restored 19th-century riad that offers serene gardens, intricate zellige tiles, and panoramic views from its tower.

For lunch, try Nomad or Café des Épices, two rooftop spots with delicious Moroccan dishes and views over the Medina. Don’t skip the lemon chicken tagine or lamb couscous to recharge for the afternoon.

Once refuelled, take a stroll through the Mellah, Marrakech’s historic Jewish Quarter, the perfect place to slow down. Visit the beautifully restored Alzama Synagogue, one of the few active ones in Morocco.

Before sunset, escape the buzz at Menara Gardens for a serene afternoon escape. Built in the 12th century, this park is centered around a large pool and framed by olive groves.

As the sun sets, head to Jemaa el-Fnaa, the square that never sleeps. During golden hour, it transforms into an open-air stage: expect musicians, storytellers, snake charmers and the tempting scent of food stalls.

Moreover, it is a perfect spot for dinner. I highly recommend ordering lamb kebab or maakouda sandwich on the stalls, tasty and easy to eat. Lastly, end your evening the Moroccan way: with a glass of mint tea, best enjoyed from a rooftop above the square.

Day 2: Marrakech’s Palaces and Gardens

After the energy of your first day, it’s time to slow down and sink into the serenity and history of Marrakech. This second day of your Ultimate 7-Day Morocco Itinerary: Discover Marrakech and the Desert is all about hidden gems, palaces and lush gardens.

Start your day with a visit to the Bahia Palace, a 19th-century masterpiece of Moroccan design. Wander through its sunny courtyards, carved ceilings, zellige walls, and tranquil gardens. It’s a perfect glimpse into royal life.

Additionally, visit the Badi Palace, once one of the most extravagant palaces in the world, now a beautiful ruin. Don’t miss the underground tunnels and the old prison cells if you’re into a bit of mystery.

Before lunch, head to the Saadian Tombs, rediscovered in 1917 after being sealed for centuries. This royal necropolis is filled with carved marble stucco. It’s a small site but deeply atmospheric, where Sultan Ahmed al-Mansur lies, one of Morocco’s rulers who led the country into a golden age in the late 16th century.

Cool off and refuel in La Famille, a garden café known for fresh vegetarian dishes and delicious desserts.

By midday, escape the city’s heat and head to the legendary Majorelle Garden, one of Marrakech’s most iconic sights. Originally created by French painter Jacques Majorelle in the 1920s and later saved by Yves Saint Laurent, this lush oasis offers a stunning botanical garden with exotic plants, cobalt blue structures, and peaceful pathways. Inside, don’t miss the Berber Museum, a small but rich tribute to Morocco’s Indigenous heritage, showcasing jewellery, textiles, and traditions that span the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara.

Day 3: Marrakech to Ouarzazate and Aït Ben Haddou

Ready for a change of scenery? Today, you’ll leave the urban bustle behind and venture deep into Morocco’s southern landscapes.

Prepare early for a scenic drive (4.5-5 h) over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest mountain pass in North Africa, reaching over 2,260 meters. The winding road offers spectacular views of the snowy High Atlas Mountains, terraced valleys, and Berber villages.

By midday, you’ll have arrived in Ouarzazate. A city known for its sun-bleached kasbahs and film sets, this desert town is a mix of history and Hollywood.

Visit the Taourirt Kasbah, an impressive fortress with courtyards and mudbrick towers that once belonged to the Glaoui dynasty. Nearby, you can also tour the Atlas Corporation Studio, where you can walk through full-sized sets such as those from Gladiator, Prince of Persia and Games of Thrones.

For lunch, my favourite spot is Chez Dimitri, a traditional restaurant serving hearty tagines and even pasta.

After lunch, drive just 30 minutes to the postcard-perfect Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Morocco’s most iconic ksars (fortified villages). Without a doubt, you should wander through its clay alleways, climb to the top for sweeping views, and don’t forget your camera, especially at sunset, when the entire village glows golden. It’s no surprise this stop is a highlight in our Ultimate 7-Day Morocco Itinerary: Discover Marrakech and the Desert, where every location feels like a scene from a film.

Spend the night nearby in a cosy kasbah guesthouse. I recommend Riad Caravane or Karbah Tebi.

Day 4: Aït Ben Haddou to Merzouga

Today, you will have to wake up a bit early as our trip to Merzouga is long (6h), but the landscapes change so dramatically, it will feel like a road trip through time.

Head southeast towards the Draa Valley, one of the most beautiful palm-filled valleys in all of Morocco. The road winds through desert plains, high mountains, and eventually opens up to this green oasis, over 200 km of palm groves, kasbahs and Berber villages.

Continue east and arrive at Merzouga, the gateway to the spectacular Erg Chebbi dunes, some of the highest sand dunes in North Africa, reaching up to 150 meters tall. As you approach, the flat desert suddenly gives way to soaring dunes that look like from another planet. This is your entry into the Sahara Desert experience.

Trade your car for a camel and ride across the dunes as the sun begins to dip.

Expect a traditional Moroccan dinner, gnawa drumming, and a chance to truly disconnect in a unique landscape. No Wi Fi here, just sand, stars and silence!

Spend the night in a traditional nomad-style desert camp or luxury tents; there’s an option for every traveler.

Day 5: Sunrise and Todra Gorge

Set your alarm early, trust me, it’s worth it. Watching the sun rise over the dunes of Erg Chebbi is a moment you’ll never forget. As the first rays of light ripple across the sand, the colors shift to golden. It’s peaceful, surreal, and one of the most iconic experiences in Morocco.

After a warming Berber breakfast (e.g. flatbreads, olives, honey, and mint tea), you’ll leave your desert camp and begin the drive towards the Todra Gorge (4,5 h).

As the landscape shifts from sandy plains to rocky cliffs, you’ll arrive at this dramatic canyon, carved over millennia by the Todra River. Its limestone walls soar up to 300 meters, creating a spectacular backdrop for a gentle hike through the narrow paths.

Moreover, make time to visit the nearby town of Tinerhir, where traditional mud-brick homes and palm groves offer a glimpse into everyday Berber life. It’s the perfect place to slow down and connect with local culture.

Tonight, end your day at a guesthouse or kasbah-style hotel nestled near the gorge, or in Tinerhir.

Day 6: Return to Marrakech

On the sixth day of this 7-Day Morocco Itinerary: Discover Marrakech and the Desert, it’s time to say goodbye to the mountains and desert landscapes. The drive back to Marrakech takes you once again through the winding beauty of the High Atlas Mountains, with breathtaking views of red cliffs, deep valleys, and Berber villages.

Travel tip: Plan a few scenic stops to stretch your legs and snap some final mountain photos!

As you approach Marrakech, the city’s red skyline welcomes you back. But instead of rushing into the Medina, take this evening to unwind in a Moroccan style.

Indulge in a traditional hammam; The best ones are Hammam Rosa Bonheur or La Mamounia for a truly rejuvenating experience. Enjoy a black soap scrub, a tramy cleanse and argan oil massages. Undoubtedly, after days on the road and in the desert, your skin will thank you.

Day 7: Final Day in Marrakech

Use your last day to revisit favourite spots or discover new corners of Marrakech. You can visit the Medersa Ben Youssef, an ancient Islamic school known for its intricate tilework and architecture.

Shop for last-minute souvenirs in the souks, from spices and argan oil to handmade pottery.

Finally, enjoy a farewell lunch at a traditional Moroccan restaurant before heading to the airport, reminiscing about your incredible 7-day journey through Morocco’s cultural heritage and desert nature.
